Volume of a Cylinder

See the instructions below.

How can you compute the volume of a cylinder given its diameter and height?

Instructions

  1. If necessary, use the cubes to help recall what the area of a circle and the volume of a layer or slice of height 1 for the cylinder.

  2. Enter your volume for a slice of the cylinder of thickness 1. Click NEW SLICE to generate cylindrical slices with that volume of thickness 1. Drag them to either the 3D or 2D drawing to see how your slice compares to the cylinder. Make any necessary adjustments to your volume.

  3. Generate more slices and fill the cylinder. Compute the volume of the cylinder knowing the volume of each slice and the number of slices you need. Enter this volume and check to see if you are correct.

  4. How can you determine the volume of any cylinder given its diameter and height?
