Amy Ray published in Feminist Teacher

Graduate Research Assistant, Amy Ray, recently had a book review accepted for publication in the journal Feminist Teacher titled “A Critical Look at Danica McKellar’s Math Doesn’t Suck: How to Survive Middle School Mathematics Without Losing Your Mind or Breaking a Nail”. From a feminist perspective, Amy's review explores the positioning and representation of girls in McKellar’s book by focusing on the mathematical contexts used to present mathematical content and how these mathematical contexts represent females as knowers and doers of mathematics. Results from text analysis indicate that although the intention of the book may be to highlight the value of females as diverse learners of mathematics, the contexts used reveal a limited scope of situations in which females interact with mathematics.
