Two CMP teachers, Cynthia Callard and Jennifer Kruger, co-authored an article with Jeffrey Choppin in the latest issue of Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School with Jeffrey Choppin. The ideas in this article are based on their experiences teaching the Accentuate the Negative unit.

The article, Interpreting Standards as Sense-Making Opportunities (August 2014, Volume 20, Issue 1, Page 24), is available to purchase if not a subscriber to Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School.

Abstract:

Student-generated algorithms, despite being inelegant and cumbersome, can nevertheless highlight a Common Core standard on rational number subtraction to show flexibility and understanding.
