Mathematical Reflections and Mathematical Practices

The Mathematical Reflections questions provide an opportunity for the teacher and students to discuss the goals of the Investigation. After the class discussion, which can take place orally or in written form, students record their responses to the Mathematical Reflection questions to have a record of their current understandings. The teacher gains an understanding of student thinking during the discussion and then can assess individual understanding based on each student’s written work.

Each CMP lesson allows students to engage in the Mathematical Practices. Using the Mathematical Practices Reflections at the close of each Investigation allows students to name what they have done. Students demonstrate to themselves the power of the Practices. Some teachers also include a discussion of the Mathematical Practices during the Summarize of a particular Problem where a specific practice was evident and widely used by students.
