Reflecting on the CMP4 “Mini” Summer Institute at MSU
On June 25–26, 2025, the CMP team welcomed educators from across the region to East Lansing for a two-dayprofessional learning experience focused on Connected Mathematics 4 (CMP4). Held on the campus of Michigan State University in Wells Hall, the CMP4 “Mini” Summer Institute brought together a dedicated group of teachers to dive deep into algebraic development, explore unit content, and collaborate around effective instructional practices.
From the start, the energy was high. After coffee and snacks to kick things off, participants were welcomed by Betty Phillips and the CMP author team. The opening session focused on the algebraic foundations of CMP4—a thread that continued throughout the institute. Led by Yvonne Slanger-Grant, Jim Mamer, and Kathy Dole, the team modeled ways CMP4 helps students make sense of patterns and structures across grades.
A Closer Look at the Learning
Throughout the two days, teachers engaged in grade-specific breakout groups that focused on Units from the CMP4 curriculum:
-
Grade 6: Variables & Patterns and Number Connections
-
Grade 7: Moving Straight Ahead and Shapes & Designs
-
Grade 8: Thinking with Mathematical Models
Sessions allowed for both exploration of unit content and meaningful discussion about
classroom practice. Teachers reflected on their own learning, collaborated on implementation
strategies, and previewed upcoming units on Day 2. We saw rich conversations and real
“a-ha” moments unfold as educators engaged with one another and the materials.
Beyond the Classroom
One of the most joyful moments came during lunch on Day 2 when Sparty, MSU’s beloved mascot, made a surprise appearance! Teachers gathered for pictures and laughs, adding an extra dose of Spartan spirit to the event. We’ll be sharing some of our favorite photos from the visit—including plenty of smiles and Sparty high-fives.
Looking Ahead
The institute concluded with a whole-group session that highlighted how algebraic
reasoning progresses across grade levels in CMP4. Teachers left energized, equipped
with materials, and ready to bring new ideas into their classrooms.
We are grateful to everyone who joined us and contributed to such a dynamic learning environment. Special thanks to the CMP team, facilitators, and MSU staff who helped make this event possible.
