Changes CMP2 to CMP3 Grade 8
Overall Changes
The most significant change in 8th grade is that there are now two paths through 8th grade; One to accommodate CCSM 8th grade and one to accommodate CCSSM for Algebra 1. There are eight units in 8th grade. If a student completes all 8 units, he/she will have completed CCSSM for 8th grade and Algebra 1.
The statistics required by CCSSM for 8th grade is incorporated into the Thinking With Mathematical Models unit. A new end of year unit was created to introduce students to some of the more abstract ideas in the CCSSM algebra objectives. Functions are the unifying theme of the unit, hence the title, Function Junction. Those objectives include developing: (1) formal language and notation associated with the function concept and special attention to step, piecewise, and polynomial functions; (2) properties of arithmetic and geometric sequences; (3) connections between algebraic expressions for functions whose graphs are related by translations and stretching; (4) completing the square methods to write quadratic expressions in equivalent vertex form; and (5) the quadratic formula, complex numbers, and operations on those new kinds of numbers. The rest of the units have minor changes, which include a couple of name changes. In general, Frogs, Fleas, and Painted Cubes and Function Junction are Algebra 1 units. However, we feel strongly that 8th grade students should explore parts of Frogs, Fleas, and Painted Cubes. In addition, there are one or two problems or Investigations in other units that are designated for Algebra 1.
