Data About Us: Statistics and Data Analysis

Data About Us

Topics

Analysis of data distributions, including shape, measures of center (mean, median, mode) and variability (range, interquartile range, mean absolute deviation).

Overview of Changes

Significant Changes: Interquartile Range (IQR), Mean Absolute Deviation (MAD), Box and Whisker Plots, and Histograms have been added to accommodate CCSSM.

Detailed Description of Changes

With the advent of the CCSSM, Data about Us has undergone several significant changes. In CMP2, Data About Us was intended to be a capstone unit, tying together the content addressed in elementary school. Now, in the CCSSM, the attention to statistics and data analysis in the K-5 curriculum has been minimized so students’ experiences are limited, yet in the 6th grade CCSSM, the expectations for student learning are higher. As a result, CMP3, Data about Us is intended to introduce a number of statistics and data analysis concepts that likely have not been addressed in the K-5 curriculum as well as including topics that are new at Grade 6. You will notice that the first two investigations are similar to content that was in Data About Us from CMP2. Investigation 3 introduces new content to 6th grade, the Interquartile Range (IQR), and the Mean Absolute Deviation (MAD). Investigation 4 also introduces new content to 6th grade, Histograms and Box and Whisker Plots.

CMP3 Data About Us CMP2
Investigation 1 What’s in a Name? Organizing, Representing, and Describing Data
1.1 How Many Letters Are in a Name? Similar to CMP2 DAU 1.1
1.2 Describing Name Lengths What Are the Shape, Mode, and Range?  Similar to CMP2 DAU 1.2
1.3 Describing Name Lengths What Is The Median? Similar to CMP2 DAU 1.3
Investigation 2 Who’s in Your Household? Using the Mean
2.1What’s a Mean Household Size?  Similar to CMP2 DAU 3.1
2.2 Comparing Distributions With the Same Mean Similar to CMP2 DAU 3.2
Plus Mean as a Balance Point from CMP2 DD 2.2
2.3 Making Choices Mean or Median? This is new to emphasis the difference between mean and median
2.4 Who Else Is in Your Household? Categorical and Numerical Data  Similar to CMP2 DAU 1.4
Investigation 3 What’s Your Favorite...? Measuring Variability
3.1 Estimating Cereal Serving Sizes Determining the IQR  Similar to CMP2 SP 1.3 (diff data)
3.2 Connecting Cereal Shelf Location and Sugar Content Describing Variability Using the IQR Similar to CMP2 DD 2.4 (+ IQR)
3.3 Is It Worth the Wait? Determining and Describing Variability Using the MAD This is a new problem.
