Artificial Intelligence as a Teaching Partner: Supporting Deep Proportional Reasoning and Active Learning for All Students
Alden J. Edson, Elizabeth D. Phillips, & Yvonne Slanger-Grant
Tuesday, October 27, 2026 | 3:15–4:15 pm
Sheraton Denver Downtown | Directors Row H
This session explores how AI-driven tools can help mathematics leaders and teachers implement research-based strategies that foster deeper mathematical understanding and ensure active participation for all students. Participants will learn how AI provides real-time insights into student reasoning, enabling teachers to dynamically adapt instruction. We’ll discuss how these tools promote engagement, track student progress over time, and create inclusive learning environments where all students can thrive in problem-based mathematics classrooms.
National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Annual Meeting & Exposition – Denver, CO
Connecting Proportional Reasoning to the Real World: Engaging Students through STEM Problems
Yvonne Slanger-Grant, Alden J. Edson, & Elizabeth D. Phillips
Thursday, October 29, 2026 | 1:00–2:00 pm | Session 3029
Colorado Convention Center | Room 406–407
How can we provide students with access to high-quality mathematics, meaningful engagement opportunities, and pathways to excellence in learning, all while connecting proportional reasoning to the real world? Drawing on research, student work, and feedback from over 500 field test teachers, we will highlight strategies to deepen understanding, engage learners, and celebrate diverse ways of thinking in middle grades mathematics classrooms using Connected Mathematics Project’s STEM Problems.
Artificial Intelligence in Action: Supporting Proportional Reasoning in Problem-Based Classrooms
Alden J. Edson, Elizabeth D. Phillips, & Yvonne Slanger-Grant
Friday, October 30, 2026 | 2:30–3:30 pm | Session 3013
Colorado Convention Center | Bluebird Ballroom 3A
This session illustrates how the Connected Mathematics Project uses artificial intelligence to support teachers and students in problem-based mathematics classrooms. Drawing on a digital platform embedded with the Connected Mathematics®4 curriculum, we show how machine learning helps identify, support, and track students’ proportional reasoning strategies within and across problems over the course of a year, providing real-time insights to inform instruction.
Reimagining School Algebra in the Age of Artificial Intelligence
Elizabeth D. Phillips, Alden J. Edson, & Yvonne Slanger-Grant
Friday, October 30, 2026 | 4:00–5:00 pm | Session 3021
Colorado Convention Center | Room 303
AI can solve most math problems in the K–16 curriculum. So, what are the most important mathematical ideas students need to know? How do they come to understand them? How do we help them know what they know? This talk explores essential algebraic and functional concepts in school algebra, highlighting their relevance and showcasing examples of student understanding. It also provides insights into how AI can support teaching and assessing these ideas, enhancing both learning and evaluation.
Michigan Council of Teachers of Mathematics (MCTM) Annual Conference – Grand Rapids, MI
Engaging Students in Meaningful Mathematics: Connecting Problem-Based Learning to the World
Alden J. Edson, Yvonne Slanger-Grant, & Elizabeth D. Phillips
Friday, November 6, 2026 | 12:15–1:15 pm
Richard M. DeVos Center, Grand Valley State University | Room 2
How can rich mathematics learning connect to students’ lives, communities, and futures in meaningful ways? Join us as we explore how the problem-based mathematics curriculum Connected Mathematics®4 (CMP4) supports students in seeing mathematics as a tool for understanding and shaping the world. Drawing on examples from CMP4 and insights from over 500 field-test teachers from Michigan and other states, we will examine contextual, problem-based tasks that invite students to engage with real-world situations, analyze data, and make sense of complex problems. Participants will experience a range of problem types, including modeling tasks, data investigations, and collaborative activities, designed using the CMP4 STEM Problem Format. These problems position students as active sense-makers, elevate student voice, and connect mathematical ideas to relevant contexts. We will also highlight teacher resources that support the design and enactment of meaningful mathematical experiences that foster student agency and engagement.
Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE) Annual Conference – Baltimore, MD
The CMP4 Problem Hub for Teacher Education: Supporting Preservice Mathematics Teachers’ Planning, Enactment, and Reflection
Alden J. Edson, Yvonne Slanger-Grant, & Elizabeth D. Phillips
February 2027 | Date and time to be announced
Marriott Baltimore Waterfront
This session introduces the Connected Mathematics®4 (CMP4) Problem Hub for Teacher Education, a practice-based infrastructure for preservice mathematics teacher learning. The CMP4 Hub supports planning, enactment, reflection, and instructional decision making through engagement with rich, coherent problems. Participants explore how educative curriculum materials, including the Launch–Explore–Summarize lesson model, student work, and teacher supports, can be leveraged across methods courses, microteaching, and field-based experiences to support ambitious mathematics teaching. Through collaborative engagement with selected CMP4 Problems, attendees consider how teacher educators can support preservice teachers in analyzing student thinking, adapting curriculum materials, and designing instruction for diverse learning contexts.
