Overview of Changes
Major changes The introduction to probability in the CMP2 6th grade unit, How Likely Is It?, has been combined with the CMP2 7th grade unit, What Do You Expect?
Detailed Description of Changes
The Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM) call for probability only in grade 7. Consequently, this is the only unit in the Connected Mathematics curriculum that develops students’ abilities to understand and reason about probability. This unit combines investigations from the CMP2 sixth grade probability unit, How Likely Is It? and the seventh grade probability unit, What Do You Expect?.
From study of the unit, students will gain an understanding of experimental and theoretical probabilities and the relationship between them. Through the examples and problems, the unit also makes important connections between probability and rational numbers, geometry, statistics, science, and business.
New Investigation | Changes in CMP2 Investigations |
---|---|
Investigation 1 A First Look at Chance | Investigation 1 is Investigation 1 of How Likely Is it? from CMP2. |
Investigation 2 Experimental and Theoretical Probability | Investigation 2 is identical to Investigation 2 of How Likely Is it? from CMP2 except the order of the last two problems are switched around. |
Investigation 3 Making Decisions with Probability | Investigation 3 is Investigation 3 of How Likely Is It? from CMP2 with the addition of the Roller Derby problem from How Likely Is It? Problem 4.3. |
Investigation 4 Analyzing Compound Events Using an Area Model | Investigation 4 is compilation of problems from multiple investigations. Problem 4.1 is a new problem. Problem 4.2 is Investigation 2 Problem 1 of What Do You Expect? from CMP2. Problems 4.3 and 4.4 are Problems 3.1 and 3.2 from What Do You Expect? from CMP2. |
Investigation 5 Binomial Outcomes | Investigation 5 is Investigation 4 of What Do You Expect? from CMP2. |
