CMP Welcomes Chris Waston to the Staff

We are proud to welcome Chris Waston, a new addition to the Connected Mathematics Project staff. Chris has an extensive background in education and a passion for transforming the field. He was kind enough to answer some questions about himself so the MSU community can get to know him better.

Chris is from Detroit, Michigan, and grew up on the east side of the city but went to school on the west side for his entire life. Besides Detroit, he has lived in East Lansing and Rochester Hills, Michigan. Chris has a love for self-help books, sports radio, and watching his favorite football teams, the Detroit Lions and the MSU Spartans, in his free time. He also enjoys testing out and using cool technology.

Chris has traveled abroad and had the opportunity to study in New Zealand and Australia for six weeks after undergrad. During his stay, he visited various schools and lived with two different host families, which he describes as an amazing experience. He also had an exhilarating experience skydiving with his wife.

Growing up, Chris was always involved in extracurricular activities such as Academic Games and Chess. In college, he helped start a student organization, and he continues to work towards transforming education and increasing the number of Black males in the teaching profession through his work with the Black Male Educators Alliance where he serves as the Director of Marketing.

As a Specialist with the Connected Mathematics Project team he focuses on communications and technology: managing websites and social media accounts, communicating the story of CMP with various stakeholders, collaborates with the team to support data collection and analysis, and assists with CMP events in person and online.

Chris earned his Bachelor's from Michigan State University where he majored in Elementary Education with a minor in Mathematics. He received his Master's from Michigan State University in Teaching and Curriculum with a concentration in K12 Administration. Before coming to CMP, Chris was the Director of Curriculum and Instruction for Mathematics for the University Prep School District in Detroit where he spent nine years.

When not working, Chris enjoys spending time with his family: his wife Sarah, and their four children who keep them busy but provide them with a lot of memories and love on a daily basis.

We are excited to have Chris Waston join the team here at Connected Mathematics Project!
